Our Ships

The Very Heart of SEA is Our Ships

For 50 years, SEA students have been collecting data, conducting research, and contributing to our understanding and stewardship of the world’s oceans from the decks of our tall ship ocean research vessels.

Launched in 2001, the SSV Robert C. Seamans is the most sophisticated oceanographic research/sailing school vessel ever built in the United States. The Seamans is meticulously maintained but requires ongoing investments to support its operation throughout its useful life. By ensuring the safety and reliability of our ships to the highest standards, we continue to increase our impact and enhance the life-changing education and scientific discovery that takes place onboard these research platforms.

We recently completed a major maintenance period on the SSV Corwith Cramer. While there is still important follow-up work to do on the Cramer, our focus has shifted to the Robert C. Seamans to complete necessary and routine maintenance, and equip the ship with upgrades to science, safety, and sailing equipment, and living spaces.

The Seamans maintenance was conducted in four phases during scheduled breaks in the Seamans sailing schedule. In addition to mandatory American Bureau of Shipping and US Coast Guard surveys and maintenance, an extensive work list, including maintenance to the rigging, engineering systems, galley and living spaces, and upgrades to scientific and navigation equipment.

Your support will allow us to upgrade and sustain both ships – the very heart of our organization – and thus make possible our programs, which contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
