OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Director of Student Services, the Program Assistant plays a key role in supporting students’ success in SEA’s programs, both on-campus and during the sea component. S/he/they are focused on student preparation and the student experience throughout the enrollment period at SEA. Major areas of responsibility include community development, front line medical supervision, mental health support, and at sea coordination with faculty and staff. The Program Assistant lives on campus when students are on campus and in most cases sails with the students during the sea component in a role designed by the faculty to best fit the program needs. This is a full-time, seasonal, non-benefit eligible position that begins a few days before students arrive on campus and ends at program wrap in port.

MAJOR TASKS

• Community Development – lives with the students and supervises the development of community norms, and emotional/mental welfare of students. Plans extracurricular and morale-boosting free time activities.
• Program Logistics- leads student meal planning, budgeting and execution. May be responsible for travel days from shore component to ship,

• Medical Supervision – works closely with the SEA Medical Coordinator to ensure student safety and welfare when on campus.  Serves as a front-line intervention for medical and mental health issues on campus.  At sea, may serve as the shipboard medical officer.

• Academic Support – supports program faculty as needed by assisting students outside of the classroom with assignments, leads discussions, and helps students meet their academic goals
• Marketing & Development – Documents the experience for students by taking quality photographs, upload photos to the online group album weekly

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in outdoor education, environmental science, marine biology, or a related field
• At least one year of experience in student support at the secondary, gap year, or undergraduate level; experience with off-campus programs preferred
• Experience working with diverse groups of students
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality regarding student records and other information of a confidential nature
• Wilderness First Responder or higher medical training preferred. SEA offers discounted/free WFR training annually in December.
• Mental Health training is preferred.
• Experience in conflict resolution, group facilitation, and/or teaching
• Ability to connect well with people and develop strong mentoring relationships with young adults

Two positions available:

Salary starts at $1600 per month and is commensurate with experience. Housing and food are provided on campus and at sea (if sailing).  Upward mobility and professional maritime training are possible for candidates seeking sea-going licenses or scientific training.
